maya-mentalray studio lighting by Matt-Mills maya-mentalray studio lighting by Matt-Mills
NOTE: This tutorial may be out of date as it was created several years ago and I have not done much rendering with the latest versions of Maya..

This is a quick tutorial on how to achieve a basic studio lighting setup with Maya and Mental Ray using a single hdr image and final gather.

Click the Download File button to download the .hdr file.

Feel free to send me a note if you have any questions.

My first guess (without seeing it) would be that hdri texture is stretched on your sphere making it appear distorted in the reflection.

wow! i almost got the effect :) thanks for the amazing tutorial.
However, there is a line coming exactly in the centre of the sphere which seems to be dividing in into two parts, can't figure out what went wrong :( I'm sure i missed out on some point or did something unwanted. But, i'm very happy that i got the technique. Thanks again :)

You probably just need to change your menu set to Rendering. Just press F6, or use the drop down box right under File (will probably say Animation if you haven't changed the menus ever).

For those you that have a newer version of maya, follow these steps to finding the material mi_car_paint_phen.

1. go to Window>Rendering Editors>Hypershade
2. Find where it says "create maya nodes" click the triangle next to it.
3. select mental ray nodes
4.click on materials. mi_car_paint_phen will be the third material

Thanks man!!! I tried it and it really works. This is my 1st render with advance render software like mental ray. I was really struggling haha. But one thing tho, i don't really know what the rays are for.. i tried from 1-500, and render them, it remained the same.

Good tutorial, I'm a beginner and i learned how to quickly go through buttons to get the lighting like that.

Though...only thing is bothering...What are these settings i'm picking? and what do they do, and what are they used for?

Your telling me to select this, and select that. and now we got a shiny sphere...(easy to follow) but i don't know WHAT those things are settings we're choosing are.

A simple tutorial indeed and straight forward, but its doesn't explain nothing to me. what is filter mitchell? what is it used for? and etc.

But thanks regardless. (Your don't have to answer any of the question, i'm just saying in my opinion everything was a bit too straight forward...and more could of been learned about using the settings to create the desired effect)

another great tutorial thanks! I have one issue though... I dont have a Final Gather Rays option to increase the rays. All those render settings options are actually quite different on my mac. I even checked Maya Help and googled the issue but cant find out if there is any other way to get to that property and change it in any other way. (i use Maya 2008)

I don't have access to Maya 2009 right now, so I'm not sure about that..sorry.

Try to right-click on the hdr file link, and save the link to your computer. It should save an .hdr file.

Thanks for the tutorial. I found it very useful and will definitely bear it in mind for future studio style renders.

I have just one question though: why did you decide to map the HDR file onto a sphere rather than using Maya's built-in 'Imaged Based Lighting' render settings item?
Reply
:iconmatt-mills:
Matt-Mills Featured By Owner Jan 29, 2009  Professional Interface Designer
Well, in my opinion, mapping the hdr onto a sphere gives you better control of the light output and visibility option for relections/refractions. Also, when I began using this method, the IBL system in Maya was not as advanced as it is now. Honestly, I haven't used Maya's IBL feature much, so I don't know if it is a better option or not, but if you any experience with it I'd like to hear your opinions as well.

Well, to be honest, I'm no expert when it comes to rendering. I rely on great tutorials like this one to improve my rendering techniques. From my experience with Maya's IBL feature, I'd say that it is probably no better than your method of HDRI lighting but it might be worth giving it a try if you haven't used it in a while.
